Environmental liabilities associated with soils contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons is a serious environmental problem in North America, and represents a growing market for qualified treatment companies. In the USA, estimated costs to clean up identified treatment sites amount to billions of dollars. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates there are over 55 million tonnes of PCB-contaminated soils on their national priorities list alone. In Canada the estimated quantity is up to five million tonnes.
